Feet are divisive: people either like them or they don’t. But for most of us, they are personal, and we’re not always comfortable having them touched. In first century culture, though, in Palestine, foot-washing was as common as wiping your shoes at the door is to us. What can we learn from Jesus’ example of washing his disciples’ feet? In a world of superficiality, Jesus brought depth, and that was hard for people to understand – then as now! We may resist having others scratch the surface of us, finding the real ‘you’, but it is oh, so worth it in terms of the healing it can bring.
