Christmas eve is often one of the hardest occasions for a preacher to talk. After all, what can be said that hasn’t been said before about the birth of Jesus? My temptation is always to ascend the pulpit stairs and say, “Jesus is born! Good night, everybody!!” But that wouldn’t quite cut it.
This year, I decided to unload a bit of Jesus’ baggage. It’s contained in Matthew 1.1-25. It’s Matthew’s version of Jesus’ family tree – his genealogy. In the older versions of the Bible, it contains the word “begat” a lot. After the text was read, I began with a question to the congregation (a full house at St. Paul’s, Nobleton).
